GOOD, HONEST FUN

If you're looking for 5 star acting this is potentially not for you - but if you want a thoroughly enjoyable evening then I'd definitely recommend it! Beverley Knight's singing is simply superb - as is that of the rest of the cast - and some of the songs will have you out of your seat. If you're looking for something not-too-serious and a bit of a laugh, then this is for you!

AVERAGE REALLY

I thought this was ok. The actress playing Rachel had a good voice but seemed to struggle with some numbers and she was supported by Nicky. There wasn’t much storyline so I got a bit bored.

UNCONVINCING

Disappointed. The show was ok because the songs are great. But the acting lacked authenticity and the singing was hit and miss. Nicki was the most convincing actor whilst Rachel saved herself with the last song of the show. Not one I would repeat unless I knew the leads were going to be better

THE BODYGUARD

What a massive disappointment. Honestly the worst stage production I have ever seen. Every expense spared on this production with dreadful lack lustre staging, few supporting cast with the “crowd” scene as Rachel is mobbed, completely laughable. Surely some extras could have been recruited from local theatre schools. I have never watched Hollyoaks or Emmerdale and if this is the standard of acting as performed, and I use the term loosely, by Arden Callaghan, then I think I have had a lucky escape. I have seen better from school children and Am Dram productions . Wooden, stilted and completely unnatural in the role. Just dreadful. To be fair to him, the majority of the other male cast members were also just as dire, shouty and unnatural in their delivery. On the plus side, music was brilliant with Melody Thornton and Emily-Mae holding the production together. Such a shame their costumes were such a let down. Kayleigh Luke, just brilliant. At last a natural, effortless talent.

DISAPPOINTINGLY AVERAGE

Saw this last night at the Alex. Not what I expected. I’d seen the version with Alexandra Burke some years ago so I guess I had a comparison. That version was more like the film . This was more of a hoe many Whitney songs can we squeeze into the plot. Yes the songs are good and excellent arrangement but it just lacked some excitement. Emily Williams can definitely sing but she isn’t a natural with the character and you don’t warm to her. Without her voice she had no presence. There was zero chemistry with Ayden Callaghan. Although he clearly based his character on Kevin Costner version he came across as a bit wooden. Emily Mae who played Nicki was however the star of the show for me . The only one with anything about her . Great voice and actually had some stage presence. Overall , a decent watch just found it average. There was no set really and it just all felt a bit cheap.

VERY DISAPPOINTING

Saw this in Edinburgh Feb 21 2023 and was very disappointed. The sound quality was absolutely terrible, particularly during the club numbers for the lead- painful to listen to during the big numbers in the first half. The actress playing Rachel’s sister far exceeded that of Melody Thornton and her gorgeous vocal was welcome relief to an otherwise flat production.

WOODEN AND CRINGEWORTHY

I can't believe how awful this show is. The acting is absolutely shocking. It's as if the American accents were enough and forget the depth and poignancy of the characters. Yes it's a musical bit there are a lot of scenes carrying the plot along. It was like watching Acorn Antiques. Lead singer is fabulous but unfortunately lacks dance ability which was really noticeable. The costumes didn't compliment her either and were poorly fitting. The gold dress they draped her in for the Oscar scene was akin to Bacofoil! The crowd scenes were embarrassing......as there are not enough cast members, so just looked ridiculous. The worst was the GCSE Theatre Studies slow motion sequences which myself and the people I went with were laughing at. Whomever thought those scenes stageworthy.....unbelievable. I haven't watched something this lack lustre in a very long time. I couldn't believe it, needs a major redirect and some some character overhauling..

What we thought

TECHNOLOGICAL Interesting amazed!

At the start you are treated to a full-on concert experience that Lady Gaga would be jealous of!

Chock-full of Houston's songs that made the film as memorable as it is today, but they fit well into the overall narrative well, without halting it.
